Looking for bulkhead connector for solar hookup into trailer tongue box , I have a Morningstar Prostar solar controller not yet installed. My intention is to obtain 2 Watt panels and hinge them together suitcase style and connect them in parallel with a single 8 AWG cable single cable with 2 conductors running to the tongue box and connected to the controller, which will be mounted close to the batteries. This portable setup will be able to be placed in the sun away from the trailer if the trailer is parked in the shade. My quest is to find a suitable connector to mount on the tongue box wall which will accept whatever plug s is are on the end of the extension cable and will accept crimped terminals on the backside inside the box to run short sections of 8 AWG to a circuit breaker and the controller. I’d really like to find something similar to the “port” connectors which folks use to bring AC shore power into a box or boat or whatever with a weatherproof cover.
Solar Power For Your RV – Is It Worth It?
We absolutely loved our time on the road. So much so it has since become into our day to day existence, wandering the US and Canada as full-time RV nomads. However, once we started to really live in it we quickly realized there were many things lacking.
This View class C motorhome by Winnebago is the model V with twin beds. This unit has all of the bells and whistles.
Live cheaply in an RV, work on the road, and see the world. This should be more than enough for us to have 2 people living and working remotely full time with about days of reserve power if it gets cloudy. It was probably more than just running a generator for power for a year, but we hate generators. They smell, they are loud, they are un-neighborly and they are expensive to run. Below is the basic diagram of how the major components in our system go together. There are a lot of details that are missing primarily fuses and breakers, the current measuring shunt and the temperature sensors but this is the gist of it.
And below is what it looks like installed. I still need to clean up some of the small sensing wires but the big ones are pretty at least. In the monitor it says that we are putting Today is a different story though. I got ours from craigslist for a song after some negotiation. The problem is cost. This is usually going to be one of the most expensive components in your system, especially because you often get what you pay for in terms of quality and longevity.
Do-It-Yourself Solar Installation
We had been tent camping and had a pop-up we took out on the weekends, but I think in my mind, off-grid camping meant hiking into the forest and pitching a tent. Fast forward a year into our travels and things changed. We were more aware of the possibilities laid out before us. We spent our first year mostly around the East coast, land of RV parks and paid camping. Some of our friends, meanwhile, had moved west and shared pictures of their rigs in the desert and other amazing places alone and untethered.

Just like water in a pipe, the smaller the pipe, the less water that can pass through it. To use the Wire Size Calculator, just follow these 4 simple steps:
Consider the top advantages of RV solar panels compared to traditional power methods: Stop worrying about electric hookups: These problems disappear when you generate your own electricity with RV solar panels. Stop relying on gas-powered generators: In a pinch, generators are better than nothing, but they produce environmentally harmful fumes and create a potential fire hazard. Solar panels, on the other hand, generate electricity safely, cleanly and silently.
Installing solar panels so you use less energy is also a huge help, the power grid can get overwhelmed at a large, full park. Another thing that can often be over looked is water pressure regulators. The pressure can often fluctuate at the intake making extremely high pressure that can damage your RV water system.
Sample Solar and Electrical Systems I’m assuming that you have a basic understanding of both volt and volt power. There are many excellent tutorials and books on both subjects. I won’t repeat the information here, but leave it to you to explore on your own if you don’t understand the basics. For an understanding of various RV and house connectors, and proper wiring, check out http: This will give you an understanding of basic RV electrical service, and how it differs from residential electric.
The system designs and components used are only examples, and need to be modified to meet your needs. You need to complete the entire design before you start implementation or you might find your system unable to meet your future expansion needs.

Share Tweet While some full-timers head southwest to spend their winter in places like Arizona and South Texas, others are flocking to the white sandy beaches of Florida where they can relax under palm trees and take in views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. On the other hand, if you feel like spending more on a luxurious RV park there are lots of highly rated resorts to choose from, too. These eight RV parks and campgrounds are some of the most popular options.

Once the solar panel installation was complete, we drove our RV straight to Quartzsite, the 2nd Xscapers convergence, and some other friends in the area. What a change! During the 1st Xscapers convergence with our old rig, we had to run the generator twice a .
I have a 5th wheel. It has two batteries. My problem is they keep going dead. I can hook up to shore power for hours and once I disconnect, they will only hold charge for a short time they are practically brand new, I replaced the old ones because I thought they were bad, now not so sure. I run the generator and they die. I installed solar panels and they die. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate your help.
I have two concerns about your problem with your RB batteries going dead.

Jun 3, 3 There are a few important things to know about electricity when wiring up an RV or solar electric system. Electrical energy Watts is is determined by multiplying voltage Volts by current Amps. This means that as you decrease the voltage on a wire, the current required to send the same amount of power increases.
For example — to send watts of power over a volt electrical system like typical home wiring requires just 1 amp of current. But to send that same watts of power over a 12 volt electrical system like in your car or RV requires 10 amps of current. Electrical wires resist current flow.
Solar Power: Solar panels are sold in varying sizes, but a watt panel is a commonly found size – particularly for RVs. That panel is rated at watts at peak efficiency – meaning on a 78 degree cloudless day at solar noon on the equator during the equinox.

Here are the numbers from our test: My answer to this discrepancy: Power is always lost when using an inverter and there are parasitic draws from our battery we cannot control such as vent fans, LED lights, radio, etc. The temperature was a mild 80 degrees and there was a slight breeze to keep the air moving inside the motorhome.
Our TVs were still plugged in but they were off and the only other thing using electricity was the overhead LED lights for the few minutes while filming inside the coach.
Deciding between a Residential Refrigerator or an RV “2-Way or 3-Way” Fridge in a motorhome is a no brainer at first glance. But if you plan on doing any off the grid boondocking, .
Share Tweet There unfortunately is not a perfect procedure for connecting your utility RV hookups. Awareness Be sure to get a spot in a campground that has the appropriate RV hookups for your type of rig and has enough room to accommodate the size. The coveted pull through sites are always a plus! Find the site hookups and see if you can keep the sewer connection as close to the RV as possible.
Have a look around the site before pulling in to get a good feeling for how you want to be positioned. You RV should have the door side pointing toward the available space where you can have tables, chairs, and possibly a campfire. Watch out for overhead issues like tree limbs. Watch that satellite dish dome if you have one. Back, or Drive In After getting a good feel for the site you can now back in or drive in as you have decided.
Once parked, start leveling your RV. Use the built in system if you have one otherwise you will need leveling blocks.
